While planting a tree may seem like a simple task, there are numerous factors to consider to ensure the trees thrive. Picking the right species that can thrive in North Texas, tree preparation, timing, location, site preparation, planting, and initial care.

If privacy is what you’re after, consider a dense evergreen shrub or tree such as:

  • Holly species
    • Buford
    • Nellie R Stevens
    • Oakleaf
  • Junipers & Cedars
    • Eastern Red
    • Blue Point
    • Skyrocket
  • Cherry Laurel
  • Loropetalum

Planting near power lines can be tricky. While it’s best to avoid planting directly beneath them, if there’s no alternative, choose small-growing tree species that reach a mature height of 20 feet or less. This helps reduce the need for frequent pruning and minimizes potential conflicts with utility maintenance.

Here are a few choices suitable to plant near power lines:

  • Red Bud species
  • Desert willow
  • Roughleaf dogwood
  • Texas persimmon
  • Yaoupon holly
  • Mexican plum
  • Serviceberry
  • Eve’s Necklace

For additional information about trees and power lines: Oncor Safety

Trees are an essential element in any landscape. With many shapes, colors, and sizes available, selecting the right tree depends on more than just looks. Thoughtful planning ensures your investment grows into a lasting asset, not a future liability.

Three Key Factors for Tree Selection:

  1. Species – Understand what the tree needs, its best features, and vulnerabilities.
  2. Form & Function – Choose a shape and size that fits the design goals of your space.
  3. Placement – Consider long-term growth, space constraints, and future impact.

Many people focus on how big a tree is at purchase; not how big it will become. Small saplings may be inexpensive but take years to make an impact. Conversely, large trees cost more and are harder to transplant and establish successfully.

Caliper Size & Establishment

Tree size is measured by caliper, the trunk diameter about 6 inches above the root flare. Establishment time (how long it takes for a tree to acclimate and grow normally) is roughly one year per inch of caliper. For example:

  • 1" caliper = ~1 year to establish
  • 3" caliper = ~3 years to establish

Larger trees take longer to settle and are more prone to stress or failure. Smaller trees, like younger people, adapt faster and grow into their space more naturally.

Ideal Tree Size Range

For most residential or commercial landscapes, a 2"–3.5" caliper tree strikes the right balance. These sizes offer an immediate presence while being manageable to plant and more likely to thrive.

Tree Selection Checklist:

  • Space: Allow for future height and width
  • Location: Avoid conflicts with structures, sidewalks, and utilities
  • Growth Rate: Smaller trees establish faster; larger trees take longer
  • Budget: Factor in cost of plant, transport, and installation
  • Aesthetics: Decide between instant impact or long-term growth
  • Transplanting: Smaller trees are easier to move and plant
  • Species: Choose varieties suited to your site and climate
  • Hardiness Zone: Always select trees appropriate for your region

The best time to plant trees is generally in the fall, so around September when temperatures cool off from summer. Waiting to plant trees in the fall allows roots to establish before winter. While some believe spring is also a good time with Texas extreme summer heat, there isn't enough time for the tree to establish itself.

From selection to install we do it all

Tree Planting

EXPERT KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLSET

We begin by choosing the best trees. Every tree is inspected closely by our arborists to ensure the best stock is installed at your property.

CUSTOMIZED PLANNING FOR YOUR LANDSCAPE

Prior to planting your new tree an arborist will work with you to find the best location on your property to optimize tree health and growth once installed. Depending on the size of the tree and how long ago the tree was removed from a spot will determine if that location can be used to replant.

ENCOURAGING HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT

If needed, we will do structural pruning to ensure your tree grows beautifully. Prior to arrival we ensure all trees that are selected have healthy dominate stems.

PROPER PLANTING TECHNIQUES

The key to successful tree planting starts from the ground up. Digging the right hole is essential for the tree's success—it's not too deep and wide enough to support proper root growth.

BREAKING APART ROOT BALL

It may look alarming but it is important to break apart the root ball so the roots are able to grow outwards instead of wrapping around itself. Their roots have been bound in a container for a long time and need to be trained to grow outward.

ROOT PRUNING

Root pruning is essential in establishing healthy roots when planting trees. Removing problematic girdling roots ensures healthy trees from the ground up.

PROPER HOLE DEPTH AND WIDTH

We plant the tree in the ground and take great care to ensure that the tree is at the correct depth and is straight.

BACKFILL WITH SOIL & WATER

Now that the tree has been installed we backfill with water to help the soil settle and secure the tree's roots into the ground. If the tree is properly planted there will not be a need for stakes to keep it in place.

MULCH

Our crew will then mulch the tree, making sure to create a bowl shape to protect the base. Be careful not to let the mulch pile up around the trunk, as it can harm the tree and void the warranty.

PROPER WATERING TECHNIQUE

Before leaving we do one more final soaking once the tree has been planted. We will also leave a detailed care guide and a 5 gallon blue bucket with soaker holes to help you water your tree properly. Watering your tree with two buckets full every other day for the first two weeks will set your tree up for long-term growth.

Emily was great helping us decide what to do about the huge live oak in our yard. We decided to remove it and once I accepted the invoice they came out the next day. They took down the tree, pruned the other trees, ground the stump and cleaned everything up with no issues. Great Job!
Response from the owner:We are so glad you were satisfied with our quick service. Emily is a great knowledgable arborist who is passionate about trees while our crews are professional and fast. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We ❤️🌳 and happy customers!

I liked that an arborist took a look at the tree first to really understand what work needed to be done to keep the tree strong, healthy, and looking good. The work crew then came by about a week later and did a great job.
Response from the owner:Offering professional services at a reasonable price is what we strive for! We ❤️🌳 and happy customers!
