We Are the ISA Certified Arborists for

Insect Management

Trees are living organisms that, especially in urban environments, are vulnerable to a variety of insect pressures. While many insects—such as pollinators and decomposers—play important roles in tree ecosystems, others like aphids, borers, and scale can cause significant stress or decline if not properly managed. Urban trees often face added challenges like compacted soil, limited root space, and heat stress, which can make them more susceptible to insect infestations. Our approach focuses on proactive, balanced care to help trees thrive in these demanding conditions.

Insects Are a Natural Part of Tree Ecosystems

Not all insects are harmful. Pollinators like bees and butterflies aid in reproduction, while decomposers like beetles help recycle nutrients. But harmful insects feed on leaves, bark, or sap, weakening trees and leaving them vulnerable to environmental stress and disease. Knowing the difference is key to responsible and effective management.

How We Identify and Manage Tree Pests

Our ISA Certified Arborists are trained to recognize early signs of insect infestations, including:

  • Discolored, curled, or stunted leaves
  • Bark damage or exit holes
  • Thinning canopy or branch dieback

Early intervention is critical. Treatments range from trunk sprays and soil drenches to targeted systemic injections, depending on the insect and severity of the issue.

Common Insects Found in the DFW Area

InsectTree HostsTreatment Options
AphidsCrape Myrtle, Elm, Oak, PecanTrunk spray (therapeutic), soil drench (preventative)
Borers (multiple species)Various speciesSystemic soil or trunk applications
Hackberry CaterpillarHackberryMonitoring only; typically no treatment
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)AshTrunk injection with Emamectin Benzoate ( e.g., Mectinite)

Important Notice:

Emerald Ash Borer has been confirmed in Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, and surrounding counties. Without preventative treatment, all ash trees are at risk of death. Learn more about EAB.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

We follow Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies that reduce harmful insect pressure while protecting beneficial organisms and minimizing environmental impact. In urban settings, trees are exposed to added stressors—such as compacted soils, heat islands, limited rooting space, poor drainage, and mechanical damage from construction or vehicles. These conditions weaken a tree’s natural defenses, making them more vulnerable to insect infestations.

To address these challenges, we incorporate holistic tree care as a foundational part of our insect management strategy. This includes improving soil health through organic amendments, optimizing watering practices, applying mulch to regulate soil temperature and moisture, and performing structural pruning to encourage strong, resilient growth. By supporting the overall health of the tree, we enhance its ability to withstand and recover from insect attacks without relying solely on chemical treatments.

Our IPM approach balances prevention, early detection, and targeted interventions—creating a long-term plan tailored to each tree’s environment, species, and risk factors. The result is healthier urban trees, fewer outbreaks, and a more sustainable landscape.

Licensed and Regulated Tree Care

All of our technicians are TDA-licensed applicators and follow strict Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) guidelines when applying any pesticides or chemical treatments. We take regulatory compliance and environmental safety seriously to ensure that every treatment is legal, responsible, and effective.

Popular Questions

Mulch is great for covering exposed roots and providing nutrients and insulation for the tree. Do not remove any exposed roots. Doing so will kill your tree.

Not exactly.

Vertical Mulching helps improve drainage and can be an additional tool in mitigating the opportunistic oomycete called Phytophthora. Poor drainage can lead to this water mold infecting many plants that sit in water logged soils.

No treatment will help your tree with Phytophthora if the site isn’t managed and drainage issues have been remedied. Once the site has been addressed and if there is a positive test result from a lab, and if infection has been detected two years in a row, our Tree Health Care technicians administer a fungal management treatment under direction from an ISA Certified Arborist. Depending on the species of the tree or if fungal treatment isn’t an option we recommend starting a Tree Health Care plan with basic or holistic fertilizer to maximize the potential recovery.

Fungal treatments begin in the Spring with three applications, 14-21 days apart.

Correcting soil compaction requires a combination of physical loosening of the soil (aeration), biological improvement (microorganisms), continued protection.

Tree roots require loose, oxygen-rich soil to survive. Through soil aeration, increased microbial activity, and protection, we can help save valuable trees from long term decline due to compaction.

Oak wilt is an infectious disease caused by a fungus (Bretziella fagacearum*). All oaks (genus Quercus) are susceptible to oak wilt, but different species may react differently to the fungus. Oak wilt is a vascular disease, and infects the whole tree, even if only one part is symptomatic. As the fungus spread through the tree, it blocks the transmission of nutrients to the canopy, causing the characteristic “wilt,” or dieback. Learn more about oak wilt prevention here.

Short answer: “yes.” Synthetic grass will eventually kill your tree. To understand why read our blog here.

Unfortunately, most turf grass is not bred to live in harmony with large trees, and trees often find themselves in competition for resources with surrounding grass. In many cases, homeowners have to choose between uniform turf coverage and tree health. To understand why read our blog here.

TREE SUPPORT SERVICES

Depending on the size of a tree there can be multiple cables in addition to bracing to support the weight. Each tree is different, and not all trees are candidates for tree support systems due to their structure.

ISA CERTIFIED ARBORIST

Certified Arborist are tree care professionals who have achieved a high level of professional distinction through their knowledge and experience in the field. This knowledge helps them diagnose any issues your trees might be having.

PREVENTATIVE EAB TREATMENT

If there is EAB activity within a few miles of where you live or property you manage we recommend preventative systemic insecticide treatment applied by a licensed TDA tree health care technician. EAB treatment lasts for 2 years and must be applied regularly to protect ash trees from infection.

OAK WILT TREATMENT

As oak wilt is a systemic, vascular disease, the most effective treatments consist of injecting the infected trees with a fungicidal chemical. The only currently recommended fungicide is Alamo®, a formulation of the fungicide propiconazole. The fungicide is administered through holes drilled in the root flare of the infected tree and should only be applied by Texas Department of Agriculture Licensed Applicators.

Air spading the soil to improve tree heatlh
AIR SPADING

Air spading helps improve tree health by increasing the tree root's access to air, water, and nutrients by decompacting the soil. Soil compaction occurs in urban environments during turf installation, construction, improper planting, and mechanical and foot traffic.

Pruning roots after tree has been air spaded.
ROOT PRUNING POST AIR SPADING

To correct this improperly planted tree our Tree Health Care Technicians air spade to expose the root flare and to prune away girdling roots. You can learn more about how to properly plant a tree here.

GIRDLING ROOTS

This tree was planted too deep and has several girdling roots (roots that circle the tree and do no flare out) that left unmanaged would eventually kill the tree. After air spading our Tree Health Care Technicians are pruning the roots and adjusting the soil around the tree to expose the root flare to improve tree health.

INSPECTING FOR POSSIBLE DECAY

Sometimes issues with a tree aren't clearly visible on the outside so an arborist will need to inspect the interior. An arborist does this by probing with a small knife to see how extensive the decay in a region of a tree is. Arborists are able to use this information along with other signs to determine if there are potential structural issues or possible increased chances for failure.

MEASURING DBH

The best way to approximate the size of a tree is to measure their dbh, (diameter, breast, height). This enables our arborists to estimate the amount needed for Tree Health Care products or pricing for Tree Removal.

We were very impressed with their tree trimming crew. They scaled our old, tall oak trees with ropes and removed problem limbs and dead undergrowth without misshaping the tree canopies. More needed removing than we realized until we saw all of the limbs on the ground in our front and back yards. It looked like a mess on the ground but they brought a wood chipper with them and cleaned up every single limb and twig. The yard was so clean afterward, it looked like landscapers had been there! Very professional.

From start to finish, Texas Tree Surgeons did a great job. The Arborist was knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. She explained the process and gathered our requests. The next day, the army showed up and worked their tails off. They followed the Arborist’s instructions and also took our input. They finished 3 very large trees, including clean-up (you’d never know they were here), including just under 1 hour.
Response from the owner:Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. Super impressed with the professionalism of this group. Very patient with all of my questions because I really love my 75+ year-old trees. Great follow up and they do what they say.
