Cabling and Bracing

We Love Trees

As trees mature, some develop structural weaknesses that can lead to serious problems—split trunks, cracked limbs, or even complete failure during high winds or storms. At Texas Tree Surgeons, our ISA Certified Arborists specialize in cabling and bracing techniques that help preserve these trees, reduce risk, and extend their life.

Why Do Trees Need Cabling or Bracing?

Certain growth patterns—like tight “V” shaped unions, co-dominant stems, or overextended limbs—make trees more prone to failure. These weaknesses can worsen with time or under stress from storms, added weight, or root problems.

Cabling and bracing systems provide supplemental structural support, helping to prevent breakage, improve tree stability, and protect nearby people and property.

Our Tree Support Services

Cabling

  • Purpose: To reduce excessive movement of limbs and prevent breakage.
  • Method: High-strength steel cables are installed between limbs or between the trunk and major branches to redistribute mechanical stress.
  • When Used: For trees with weak branch unions, long horizontal limbs, or multiple trunks prone to splitting.

Bracing

  • Purpose: To provide rigid support to weak or split joints.
  • Method: Threaded steel rods (through-rods or dead-end rods) are inserted through the trunk or branch union to reinforce structural integrity.
  • When Used: For split trunks, narrow “V” crotches, or to stabilize previous damage.

Common Conditions We Treat

  • Co-dominant stems / split trunks
  • Overextended or downward-hanging limbs
  • Cracks or included bark at branch unions
  • Cracking at the base of multi-trunk trees
  • Structural stress from recent storm damage

If you’re seeing any of these signs, schedule a consultation with one of our Certified Arborists.

Why Choose Texas Tree Surgeons?

  • Certified Expertise: All assessments and installations are performed by ISA Certified Arborists.
  • Standards-Based: We follow ANSI A300 guidelines and use industry-recommended materials and configurations.
  • Safety-First Approach: We only recommend support systems, when necessary, after evaluating all pruning or structural reduction options.
  • Preventative Care: Cabling and bracing can help you avoid costly removals or storm damage later.

Maintenance & Inspections

Tree support systems need periodic inspection to ensure continued effectiveness. Steel cables may last 20–40 years but must be monitored for wear, corrosion, or slack. We offer annual inspections for all our installed systems.

Oak wilt is an infectious disease caused by a fungus (Bretziella fagacearum*). All oaks (genus Quercus) are susceptible to oak wilt, but different species may react differently to the fungus. Oak wilt is a vascular disease, and infects the whole tree, even if only one part is symptomatic. As the fungus spread through the tree, it blocks the transmission of nutrients to the canopy, causing the characteristic “wilt,” or dieback. Learn more about oak wilt prevention here.

Short answer: “yes.” Synthetic grass will eventually kill your tree. To understand why read our blog here.

Unfortunately, most turf grass is not bred to live in harmony with large trees, and trees often find themselves in competition for resources with surrounding grass. In many cases, homeowners have to choose between uniform turf coverage and tree health. To understand why read our blog here.

If a tree’s leaves become pale green or yellow, and stay that way, something is preventing the tree from generating enough chlorophyll. Depending on the tree species it may have chlorosis.

Once a tree has been removed you won’t be able to plant another tree in that same spot immediately, and should wait for a few years. Issues can arise in the new tree for multiple reasons; roots from previous tree impeding growth of new tree, soil stripped of nutrients from former tree, disease or insect that killed the former tree could still be present in the soil and infect the new tree.

TREE SUPPORT SERVICES

Depending on the size of a tree there can be multiple cables in addition to bracing to support the weight. Each tree is different, and not all trees are candidates for tree support systems due to their structure.

STANDARDS BASED

We follow ANSI A300 guidelines and use industry-recommended materials and configurations.

SAFETY-FIRST APPROACH

We only recommend support systems, when necessary, after evaluating all pruning or structural reduction options.

PREVANTATIVE CARE

Cabling and bracing can help you avoid costly removals or storm damage later.

POST STORM ASSESSMENT

It is imperative to have your trees inspected post storm by one of our Certified Arborists to assess your tree’s need for cables and bracing to help protect it from becoming a potential hazard.

SPLIT TRUNK

Split trunks are most often found on multi-trunked trees. As these trees grow, the weight increases and width of their original stems increases growing wider and wider. Eventually, these trunks will start to grow in a way that creates internal pressure along the joint at the base of the tree.

I only have Texas Tree Surgeons cut my mature red oaks. After the big 2024 storm I had them come to access and trim the damage. They are reasonably priced and very knowledgeable about trimming different types of trees. (They don't trim red oaks like they trim pecans.) They KNOW their trees!

We are very happy with our recent experience with TTS! We had a large limb break in our back yard. An Arborist was sent out the same day to consult with us and provided a very reasonable price to have it cut and removed. We were scheduled within 2 business days, and the crew was thorough with the work and very courteous. These people are the best Tree people!

We couldn’t be happier with Texas Tree Surgeons. They’ve been caring for our trees since we moved into our home over 10 years ago, and we’ve never once felt pressured to leave a review—that alone says a lot about how they do business. Andy, Emily, and the entire team are knowledgeable, professional, and truly take pride in their work. Their attention to detail has made such a difference, and our trees have never looked better. Their pricing has always been fair, especially considering the quality of work they provide. If you want, get a few quotes for comparison, but in our experience, Texas Tree Surgeons has consistently been the best choice. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for honest, skilled arborists who genuinely care about the health and beauty of your trees.

Texas Tree Surgeons provide excellent service from bid with Sage to completion. We have 30 year old Red Oaks and Youpon Trees that Carlos and his team pruned beautifully. Michael and his team returned in July to complete additional pruning at our request. Texas Tree Surgeons is a company that I highly recommend.
