Arbor Day Foundation Recognition Programs: It’s Not Just for Cities!

Sep 23, 2025

While Tree City USA is what most people know, the Arbor Day Foundation offers several other prestigious programs designed for utilities, campuses, and healthcare institutions. These recognitions share a common goal: to celebrate organizations that enhance communities through thoughtful tree stewardship.

1. Tree Line USA: Excellence in Utility Arboriculture

Tree Line USA honors utility providers—both public and private—for striking a balance between efficient service and healthy urban forests. Operating since 1992, the program celebrates those who adopt best practices in the challenging space where trees and utility lines intersect.

Five Core Standards:

  • Quality Tree Care: Utilities follow ANSI A300 pruning standards and avoid harmful practices like topping or removing branch collars.
  • Annual Worker Training: Employees and contractors receive yearly training on proper arboricultural methods.
  • Tree Planting & Public Education: Spend at least $0.10 per customer on tree planting and community outreach.
  • Tree-Based Energy Conservation Program: Promote trees as natural tools to reduce heating and cooling costs.
  • Arbor Day Observance: Participate in or sponsor Arbor Day events with community partners.

Benefits: Improved public relations, fewer service disruptions, and cost savings through proactive tree management.

2. Tree Campus Healthcare: Trees for Healing Environments

Tree Campus Healthcare recognizes hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and senior-care facilities that integrate trees into their wellness and healing environments.

Five Program Standards:

  • Establish an Advisory Committee of at least three stakeholders, including staff and community members.
  • Develop a Tree Care Plan tailored to healthcare contexts.
  • Undertake a Community Forestry Project to engage patients and staff. F
  • Organize Educational or Celebration Events, such as Arbor Day programming.
  • Commit to a Financial Investment in tree-related activities.

Why It Matters: Trees on medical campuses reduce patient stress, support recovery, and improve overall staff well-being.

3. Tree Campus Higher Education: Cultivating Green Learning Environments

Adapted for colleges and universities, Tree Campus Higher Education (formerly Tree Campus USA) honors campuses that actively manage and celebrate their arboreal resources.

Five Standards:

  • Form a Committee to guide campus tree initiatives.
  • Develop a Tree Care Plan for planting and maintenance.
  • Invest Financially in tree stewardship programs.
  • Educate & Engage students and staff in celebration activities like Arbor Day.
  • Promote Campus Resilience via strong forest management.

Impact: Recognized campuses plant trees, involve thousands of students, and foster green spaces that support mental well-being and sustainability.

4. Other Tree-Focused Programs

  • Tree Campus K–12: This program empowers schools and younger learners to foster environmental education through tree planting and stewardship.
  • Tree Cities of the World: A joint initiative by the Arbor Day Foundation and FAO, this program expands recognition globally—welcoming municipalities that protect urban forests.
